Invest in Your Quiet Time

If we as believers are to enjoy a victorious Christian life which I know we all desire, our quiet time must be upheld in high esteem.  Quiet time is a time set apart for our personal fellowship and communion with God. Some choose to call it, daily devotion or personal fellowship. I call mine “fellowship with wisdom”. Whatever we choose to call it, the bottom line is- our goal should be- growing spiritually.

We are the creatures designed to interact and relate. Our body interacts and understands the environment through our senses: eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Our mind interacts with the mental realm though thoughts and imaginations. Our spirit also interacts with the spirit realm where God is, through fellowship and communion with God. John 4:24 said “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Why is quiet time so important?

A quiet spirit is of great value to God because we hear from God better when we are still and quiet. The wisest man, Solomon said in Ecc 4:6 that “Better is a handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.”  It is important to separate ourselves from the busyness and noisiness of our daily lives to a quite place to hear from God. Jesus practically lived by this principle. “And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.”Matt 14:23

Secondly, God is infinite in wisdom and all knowing. The more we spend time alone with Him in fellowship and communion, the more we get revelations and wisdom for our daily lives. Pr 13:20 put it this way. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise.” Your life is simply a reflection of what you spend time with. Learn to spend more time with God.

Our quiet time is also a time we enjoy God’s presence. Many Christians miss it here because some of us are so concerned with having our needs met and have missed out of the Joy of being in the presence of God. Each time we approach God, it is wrong attitude when we only pour out our long list of needs and wants and run away. Quiet time gives us an ample opportunity to enjoy God, feel His Love and relate to Him as a Father. One Man that truly knew what it meant to enjoy God’s presence was David. This was his discovery. Ps 16:11 “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore”.

The proof of spending time with God is Joy and this not that kind of Joy you express when you just got a new automobile or you buy a mortgage. This joy is a fruit of the Spirit, it flows from within and it is not dependent on outer circumstance: whether things goes right or wrong, whether you have much or little,  you still have Joy.

Finally the more quality time we spend with God the better we know Him. When I read the epistles of Paul, I am always amazed at the depth of his knowledge. Sometimes one may be tempted to think that he walked with Jesus when Christ was on earth. Paul’s life is a product of spending quality time with God. When we see married couples, the older they get the better they know each other, they understand each others’ moods, like, dislikes, and even begin to look like each other.  That is how our relationship grows with God as we spend more time with Him.

Invest in your quiet time! If you bow before God, circumstance will bow before you. I pray that God will strengthen you by His Spirit in your inner man to have better quality time with Him. May you grow in the Knowledge of God. Amen
